4 Reasons Why Swimming is Good For You

underwater shot of boy swimming laps in poolSwimming is good for your health. It’s a low-impact exercise that promotes better heart health and is beneficial for the mind and body. In Australia, infants as early as four months old are being encouraged to swim and take lessons for them to be more active, healthy, and confident in water.

As such, there’s no doubt that having a plunge pool in your Perth home could provide the entire family with great advantages. Here are some of the benefits of swimming:

1. Earn a Life Skill and Save Lives

Swimming is a life skill. When you and your children know how to swim, you get to enjoy different recreational activities in the water. You can be braver to have more indoor fun in your plunge pool or enjoy the great outdoors through kayaking and boating. Moreover, learning how to swim could give you the capacity to save lives and prevent drowning, especially in younger children.

2. Improve Fitness

Swimming is a fun and easy way to lose unwanted belly fat. Instead of lounging around at home and being a couch potato, take a dip in the pool and burn around 367 calories by doing breaststrokes in 30 minutes. Imagine the calories you’ll burn in an hour when you do a variety of strokes.

3. Natural High

Feeling stressed and tensed? Swim all your worries away. A survey done by Speedo reveals that 74% of people agrees that swimming helps release tension and stress while feeling refreshed right after. The body releases a good amount of serotonin when swimming, which can make you feel good.

4. Tremendous Health Benefits

Swimming can keep your heart rate up, build muscle strength, strengthen endurance, and promote a healthier cardiovascular system. It can make you, especially your heart and lungs, more flexible and strong. It can also help control blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure, and reduce levels of bad cholesterol.

Swim your way to a healthier lifestyle and enjoy the benefits of having a plunge pool at home. Don’t even hesitate.

How a Good Clean Water Source is Crucial for Your Body’s Functions

Clean water with a dropAmong the many things your body needs every day, it is water that tops the list. The human body consists of between 55% and 75% water, and most of your tissues, cells, and organs benefit from it. While you can go without food for over three weeks, you cannot survive a couple of days without water, particularly in hot temperatures.

Why is water that important? Here are some reasons:

Water forms the base of your saliva

The mere mention of saliva may make some people squirm uncomfortably, but beyond its seeming unpleasantness is an importance you may not know. You will find it difficult to speak without enough saliva. Chewing and swallowing food, particularly those that are dry and hard will be challenging. Even if you are able to swallow food without saliva, you may not be able to get all its nutrients. Scientists have repeatedly pointed out that the first process of digestion happens in your mouth and is greatly influenced by your saliva. Without saliva, mouth infections and tooth decay can develop rapidly.

Water forms the synovial fluid around your joints.

Your body has more than 300 joints composed of fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial joints. Fibrous and cartilaginous joints are those that range from semi-mobile to immobile joints, such as the seams that hold your skull bones together.

Synovial joints, on the other hand, are those points that are mobile and surrounded by a slippery and slick synovial fluid. This straw-coloured liquid, which has a consistency similar to that of an egg white, is often times found in sacs inside or near your joints. If you are familiar with how an engine works, then you must know the important role of oil play in lubricating the engine’s moving parts.

Synovial fluid functions — in a similar manner and absence or inadequacy of it — can be painful and possibly render your synovial joints immobile.

Water helps in regulating your body temperature

You may not be aware of it, but you have a personal temperature regulator that adjusts automatically based on particular situations. It helps in setting limits on the changes that your body reacts to, like in a cold or warm environment. The amount of heat trapped by water in your body helps in warming you up in a cold environment. It also helps in cooling you down when surrounding temperature is higher than your body temperature. This happens when you perspire, where the evaporation of water from the surface of your skin can lower your body temperature.

These are only three of the important roles that water play in your life. You must also be aware that you cannot just take in any type of water for these roles to be efficiently achieved. As the Department of Health in Australia pointed out, it’s important that people drink only clean water. This is made available for homeowners by professional clean water well drillers.

When you have an efficient source of clean water, you can be sure to fulfil your body’s needs, which in itself is essential for healthy life.

Work Green: How to Maintain an Eco-Friendly Workplace

The interior of a workplace Actual, physical workspaces aren’t going anywhere, even in this era of cloud-based collaboration and office-less offices. Millions of people still go to the office year-round, which means millions are still consuming energy and leaving large carbon footprints.

A conscious decision to go green is a good start, and you could try enlisting your colleagues (better yet, the entire company) to take these steps towards eco-friendlier office spaces.

Use Reusable Supplies

Think of the environmental impact of that cute stationery set, and suddenly it’s not so cute anymore. Scratch highly disposable products off your supplies shopping list, and go for more re-usable/recyclable ones.  Stock up on refillable pens and markers, and keep an eye out for 100% post consumer paper. These sheets have significantly smaller carbon footprints compared to regular, recycled ones.

Working late into the night? Avoid using disposable coffee pods at all costs, as its foil and plastic packaging recyclability are seriously in question.

Invest in Durable, Sustainable Furniture

Bargain basement office furniture isn’t a real deal. Their flimsy, disposable nature only serves to pile up on landfills, and Bishop Interiors agree that investing in longer-lasting quality pieces are the best way to go. Look for companies that offer eco-friendly furniture and supplies in their catalogue.

Purge Digital Inboxes

Paper-based correspondence is slowly going out of fashion in the age of email. Little do you know, letting your digital inbox pile up in the thousands (or millions) can have adverse environmental impacts too. Cloud storage isn’t entirely emission-free, as it’s still a physical storage space somewhere in the world, consuming energy by storing and managing your digital files.

Thus, computers, servers, and routers still produce greenhouse gas this way. Make it a habit of purging your inbox of unnecessary stuff, so cloud systems can ease up on bearing all that digital load.

Going green requires quite a bit of habit-breaking, but just the effort on display can inspire others to follow suit. The more we invest in eco-friendly solutions, the better our chance of having space to work with at all.

4 Best Practices to Prevent Dry Skin During Summer

Woman drinking a glass of water

Extreme summer weathers can take a toll on your health and appearance. It itches and dries the skin and can even cause wrinkles, one of the most common signs of premature aging. The sun’s ultraviolet rays, as well as the humid climate, prevents us from enjoying having a plump and soft skin. In worst cases, it results in breakouts on the face and dryness on other parts of the body.

Don’t let summer get the best of you. Here are some practices to prevent dry skin:

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Water is always the answer. Drinking lots of water moisturizes the skin from within, keeping you healthy inside out. Consume eight to ten glasses of water daily, especially if you’re always under the sun. Coconut water and cucumber juice are also great sources of water.

Don’t Forget to Moisturize

For the face, a good skin care routine consists of three steps — cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Never miss the last step, especially during summer. Moisturize your skin to prevent it from flaking and drying out. Use a natural and gentle moisturizer with ingredients like turmeric, calendula, and aloe. For intense moisturizing, using avocado oil for your skin care routine is advisable.

Always Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Using it on a daily basis protects your face from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause wrinkles on the face. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen all over your face and body before leaving the house for work or play.

Eat Well

You may have heard this before, but it’s true when they say that “beauty comes from within.” A healthy and balanced diet do wonders for your skin. Load up on fruits with high water content, such as watermelons, strawberries, and peaches. Tomatoes, oats, carrots, and sardines are also great for keeping your skin bright and glowing. Include these in a balanced diet consisting of protein, dairy, and carbohydrates.

Keeping your skin healthy and radiant exudes a different kind of confidence. Follow the above-mentioned tips to prevent itching, flaking, and drying skin during summer.

Perfectionism and Eating Disorders

An unhappy woman staring at the bathroom scales Eating disorders may have a bigger impact on those who want things to be perfect all time. In fact, people with anorexia usually describe themselves as perfectionist and being hard working and motivated. They always want to do things right and want to meet or surpass their goals in many aspects of life. The sad part is, they also suffer with low self-esteem and are anxious and depressed.

Some may believe that an eating disorder can give them a sense of control or an activity that they are good at. EDCare and other centers for eating disorders note that this can be a way to coping with their problems while also providing a source of self-worth. Those with anorexia, for instance, believed that being able to restrict or reduce their food intake is some kind of achievement. The same is also true to counting calories and losing weight.

Control and Unrealistic Goals

Those with eating disorders always feel to need to have complete control over their weight. This is why most of them set unrealistic personal goals. With impossible standards, they usually feel distressed when they fail to achieve them. They strive perfection and take control on their school or work performance, cleanliness, slimming down, and body shape.

Feeling Of “Not Good Enough”

The sad thing is, even though they excel in many things like having good grades or being a part of sports team, they may still feel not good enough. They may only feel like they have advantage by having anorexia, especially if they see others struggling to lose weight or maintain a diet. The ability to restrict themselves and lose weight fast can make them feel proud.

The Need for Punishment

Perfectionism may also lead to punishment, with many sufferers believing that they don’t deserve enjoyment. They may punish themselves by refusing to eat and see it as a form of discipline. Some of those who believe that they have eaten more than enough will restrict their food intake, do household chores, exercise too much, or purge.

Getting treatment like therapy is important to help those with eating disorder deal with negative thoughts and feelings. A well-rounded treatment program is also necessary to treat other medical issues and help sufferers set realistic goal and develop realistic body image.

Perfect Straight Teeth

Invisible Braces for Visible Smiles: Teeth Straightening Options for Adults

Perfect Straight TeethWhen it comes to self-confidence, the state of our teeth and smile have a lot to do with how we feel about ourselves and our appearance. Not having the smile we want can make us more reluctant to talk to people or laugh at their jokes. And while many adults would like to have their teeth straightened, they are often too embarrassed to wear metal braces.

Luckily, there have been some really innovative advances in modern dentistry, allowing adults to straighten their teeth efficiently and discreetly. Lingual braces, invisible braces and clear aligners are available from many dental practices, including Park Orthodontics in Glasgow. These treatments not only improve a patient’s smile, but also enhance their oral health and well-being.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are fixed braces that attach comfortably behind the teeth. Their placement in the interior of the mouth makes them virtually invisible, and that’s the main reason why they are preferred by many patients who wish to straighten their teeth without showcasing their metal braces. Lingual braces work just like regular metal braces, they are, however, made of nickel and are custom-made to fit each patient’s teeth.

Invisible Braces

Invisible braces are fixed to the teeth in the same way as metal braces; however, they are made from clear crystal materials to make them virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. Invisible braces offer the dentist total control over tooth movement and help them deliver the best results in the shortest time possible.

Invisalign

Invisalign uses a series of virtually invisible, removable, smooth, plastic aligners that help teeth move into their right position over a prescribed period of time. Invisalign clear aligners are made with 3D computer imaging technology and require shifting to the next set every two weeks. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both numbers may be different for each individual.

The aligners can be removed to eat and clean the teeth, however, patients are required to wear them at least 22 hours per day for effective treatment. They are also more comfortable than traditional braces, since they do not include any parts of metal wire.

Fish Sandwich with Fries

Woman Loses Job at Burger King for “Stealing” Food

Fish Sandwich with FriesWhen you thought you’re having a bad day at work, a woman who worked at a Burger King restaurant in Canada had an even worse experience.

Usha Ram lost her job at the food chain’s local franchise in Vancouver, British Columbia, two days after Christmas of 2013 after working there for 24 years. The owner accused her of stealing food worth $1. Janif Mohammed contested that Ram took home a meal combo consisting of a fish sandwich, a drink, and french fries.

Big Misunderstanding

Ram refuted the claims and said that the manager on duty at that time, Yayyaba Salman, gave her permission to pack the food and bring it home without paying for them because she left her wallet at home. However, Salman testified in court that he thought Ram would only take the sandwich.

He waited a week for Ram to pay for the food, but the latter was unable to do so that led the manager to raise the issue to Mohammed. Despite offering to pay for the food, the owner still decided to fire her.

Communication Barrier

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lisa Warren ruled in favour of Ram and awarded $46,000 in her name. The ruling stated that the owner failed to assess the situation thoroughly before making decisions, arguing that it was unnecessary on the pretext that employees should be aware that the management would not tolerate those taking food without permission.

I.R.Thompson Associates Ltd and other experts say that wrongful termination isn’t exclusive to one country. It happens in other countries too, like New Zealand where it’s ideal to be familiar with the employment law. NZ Government’s website, for instance, states that you may file a personal grievance against your employer within 90 days after you were fired and only if you’re no longer under a three-month trial period.

Being familiar with labour laws help because it protects your rights as an employee. If you feel your termination is invalid and you’re unsure what to do, seeking professional advice will help your case.

Magento Tips and Tricks: How to Ensure Your E-Commerce Site’s Security

A man working on his website's security While Magento is among the safest and most secure open source platforms for e-commerce sites today, malicious users (aka hackers) still manage to do damage to some poorly safeguarded websites. Here are some security tips you could implement to combat online attacks:

Make Your Password as Complex (yet Easy to Remember) as Possible

You need to have a strong password that hackers cannot easily crack. Your password should have 10 characters at least, with letters, numbers, and special characters, as well as lower and upper case letters.

Always Use the Most Updated Magento Version and Security Patches

Magento is always on the lookout for potential security breaches in their system and constantly release security patches to protect the integrity of their system. In case they find vulnerabilities, they will release updates, which you must download and install to ensure your site’s security.

Alter Your Admin Path

If you use the default admin path, you are making it easier for hackers to crack your login credentials. And when hackers use the admin path, they could easily see your login credentials and wreak havoc on your site.

Encrypt Web Pages, Particularly Where Customers Enter Their Credentials

To protect your customers’ critical information, always use a safe URL. It is mandatory to implement secure URLs specifically when processing financial transactions online. Fortunately, you could use SSL with Magento.

Consider Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra security layer to your website, says a Magento hosting specialist in Australia. Other than simply entering your username and password, you will have to input a security code that is randomly generated every 30 seconds.

In the event that a hacker gains access to your login credentials, he or she will not be getting the security code because it could only be sent directly to designated mobile phone numbers.

Use Effective Antivirus Software

Opt for antivirus software with tons of great feedback and reviews, specifically when used with Magento. Likewise, ensure that your antivirus software is regularly updated.

Making sure your e-commerce site is secure is the foundation for developing and expanding your business. While data breaches are extremely disruptive and costly, you could avoid them by implementing these measures.

5 Things That Will Keep Your Kids Safe at Home

Stair Safety for KidsRegardless of how confident you think your home is safe for your children, there’s always a chance you’ve overlooked a potential hazard. Most kids under three who visit the emergency room have household injuries, and you wouldn’t want your child to suffer the same. Here are some things you can do to create a safer home environment for your children:

Conduct regular radon testing

What makes radon extremely dangerous is the fact that it can neither be seen nor smelled. Like tobacco, Radon can cause lung cancer. This is why you need to talk to a Radon testing expert, especially if you reside in Utah where dangerous levels of this gas are prevalent in many homes.

Keep matches out of reach of children

A child can strike a match and start a fire in your home, leading to serious injury to them and other people in the house. Ensure all matches are well out your toddler’s reach at all times.

Store photo frames high up away from your child’s reach

Mount your photos on the wall. If a child drops a frame and the glass breaks, it could cut them. An alternative is to replace the glass with plastic.

Mount your television

Often, kids climb on TV stands and pull the set. If the TV falls on them, it can cause injury. To avoid this, mount the television on the wall or fasten the TV stand safely using screws to the wall.

Cover your power strips

In case your kid unplugs a cord from a power strip, they might insert a metal object into the holes and electrocute themselves. The safest thing to do is to buy a power strip cover or hide the power strips behind furniture.

If you have children at home, the only way to have peace of mind is by ensuring they are safe at all times. By carefully taking care of all potential hazards in your house, you can eliminate any unnecessary injuries that may befall them.

The 5 Surprising Benefits of Daycare for Children

Teacher teaching the kidsMany households need both parents to work to get by financially, so what more if you are a single parent. The need to work and take care of the kids at the same time can put a strain on anybody. Fortunately, daycare is an option.

While you may have heard of horror stories about daycare centers, a well-managed daycare program can be beneficial to you and your child. When looking for a daycare in Salt Lake City, make sure to choose one that supports, engages, and encourages your children, as well as provides a positive environment for the children they are caring for. Here’s how:

Develop Social Skills

Kids need to spend enough time to socialize and play with other children in a safe and supervised environment. They learn to share, play, and solve problems together. This happens at a crucial stage where their minds are still growing and have a big impact on how their personalities will develop. As they interact more with other children, they learn to make friends and be part of a team that improves their communication skills.

Recognize Authority Figures

As they are more exposed to adults, they start to recognize authority figures other than their parents. A high-quality daycare center will have role models who encourage positive behaviors in children. They discourage negative interactions and show positive attitudes only.

Better Academic Performance

Children who have been in a high-quality daycare, especially those that provide interaction and cognitive-boosting activities, are known to have higher academic and cognitive achievements in their teens. This is according to a study conducted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Eases Separation Anxiety

Children are less likely to feel anxious about separating from their parents when they are exposed to other children and adults. This is different from leaving them in the care of a babysitter or nanny. This teaches your child to be more independent while interacting with other people.

Recognize Schedule and Activities

Children at daycare centers follow a structured schedule for activities, such as playtime, eating, napping, and storytelling. This makes parents feel satisfied that their children are learning how to follow scheduled activities and not develop an erratic behavior.

No matter how much you research about that daycare, it is still a nerve-wracking decision. You are after all still leaving your child in the care of a group of strangers. However, studies show that spending time in a high-quality daycare has long-term benefits.
